October 6, 2018  Saturday It was a cloudy travel day. We made it right on time to our hotel in Junction City Kansas.

October 7, 2018 Sunday It’s a misty wet morning but dry enough when we arrived at the Eisenhower Presidential Museum in Abilene Kansas. Ike’s boyhood home and a timeline in the museum highlight his life and rise through the military and presidential election. Also on the grounds are his final resting place along with his wife Mamie and infant son. Tonight we arrive in Colorado Springs with Pikes Peak as a beautiful backdrop.

October 8, 2018  Monday  A mist and fog hung in the air this morning. It cleared a little and we could see the Air Force Academy on the other side of the freeway. We also caught a glimpse of the Chapel but Pikes Peak remained in the clouds the whole day. At the Garden of the Gods we had better luck with little or no rain and we did get some good pictures. Mist and light rain at Royal Gorge but we rode the cable cars and walked on the bridge or took the golf cart. Our afternoon drive was nice, rainy and a little sun at times. Full sun at our hotel in Alamosa Colorado when we arrived at the Hampton Inn.

October 9, 2018 Tuesday Today we had our train ride through the San Juan Mountains of southern Colordao all aboard the steam train from the Cumbres Toltec line. Steep inclines, tressels and tunnels it was a day of scenic beauty with the aspen trees in bright yellow form. But it wasn’t all sunshine, not much at all and the surprise of the day came when the snow started to fly. Just another thing to remember. Tonight we stay at the Santa Claran Casino in Espanola New Mexico.

October 10, 2018 Wednesday This morning we had a local guide on our bus for a tour of Santa Fe. We stopped for photos at the spot where the Santa Fe Trail ends. We spent time in the town square for lunch and shopping and made a visit to the Loretto Church. In Albuquerque we watched native dancers at the Pueblo Cultural Center and ended the day with an Italian dinner.

October 11, 2018 Thursday It was a fantastic day to see the balloons. Special Shape day with light winds allowed the balloons to take off, circle the field and some landed right where they left from. Lots of pictures and near perfect weather. We then had a city tour with lunch in Old Town Albuquerque. Tonight we’re going back to the festival for the evening session and fireworks.

October 12, 2018 Friday-It was mid 60s all day with sun throughout the day. We left Albuquerque on Route 66 and the singing highway to Tucumcari for lunch. The singing highway plays America The Beautiful when your tires hit the rubble strip at 45 miles per hour. In Tucumcari, time  stands still as we drove by iconic motels from the 50’s and 60’s. In Dahlhart Teaxas we stopped at the XIT Museum for an interesting lesson on the worlds largest ranch and  farming practices in the region. Tonight we’ll stay in Guymon Oklahoma.

October 13, 2018 Saturday- A wonderful sunny day as we made our first stop at the Big Well in Greensburg Kansas. The worlds largest hand dug well it’s 132 feet deep and you can walk down almost to the bottom. In 2007 Greensburg was 95% destroyed by an F5 tornado and they have a display also commemorating that event. Lunch was at the Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita Kansas. Costumed cowboys re-enact a bank robbery and there are many buildings to enter and see an authentic town from the 1800’s. Tonight we’ll stay in the Kansas city area.

October 14, 2018 Sunday-Here we are on our last day, much like the beginning, rain and snow showers to welcome us home. Not the best weather but for the main event in Albuquerque, the balloon festival was great with so many balloons. Watch for next year, soon we’ll be taking reservations.
